Visual Arts

Art can become a lifelong passion, providing students with many opportunities to develop their creativity and explore a career in the arts and media. Dr. E.P. Scarlett High School prides itself on having a well-developed studio art program where students explore artistic concepts through the use of a wide variety of materials and various creative techniques. AP Studio Art and Design is also a choice for those seeking subject enrichment and possible college credit.

Art 10, 20 and 30

These courses are designed to be enjoyable and challenging to students with an interest in art. Emphasis is placed on developing and expanding artistic skills, pushing the boundaries of your creativity and increasing your understanding of composition and the elements of visual design.

Art 10 is a course where no previous art experience is required, but a desire to learn and an enthusiastic attitude are expected. Students will have the opportunity to create a variety of assignments that explore elements of visual art and principles of design. Skills in a variety of disciplines such as drawing, painting, ceramics and metalsmithing are developed in a supportive and collaborative environment. Projects are designed to allow students to start to explore their own sense of personal expression.

Art 20 is about enabling students to grow and develop their artistic skills further. The process of abstraction, going beyond the basics of drawing realistic forms, solving design problems, and visual risk-taking are a fundamental part of the Art 20 Curriculum. Along with teacher directed exercises, students will have the opportunity to develop personal artwork with control over concept, materials, and composition

Art 30 is designed to provide students with opportunities for self-discovery and independence. This course is where all of the skills and concepts learned at the Art 10 and 20 levels are brought together. Students will have more opportunity to develop personal artwork with control over concept, materials, and composition. The development of a portfolio of work useful for application to various post-secondary arts programs is one focus of the course. Many students also find that they are able to use Art 30 as one of their courses for post-secondary entrance.
