Dear Parents and Guardians,
We had a number of trips for our students over the break. Both the trip to Spain/France and the Rugby trip to Wales/ England were appreciated by all. A big thank you to our teacher supervisors on these trips. Ms. Olauson and Mr. Huxley, our teachers in charge, did a ton of planning and organization for this and were instrumental leaders. They had with them other supervisors from our school including Mr. Berry, Mr. Guyard, Ms. McGregor, Ms. Malayko and Ms. Rip. A huge thank you on behalf of our school for taking care of our students while overseas. Thank you also to the rugby coaches on the rugby trip - Chris and Eric. We are also appreciative of staff who joined us from Wise Wood on the Rugby trip - Mr. Barile, Mr. Gough and Mr. Wilson. I know that everyone had enriching and engaging experiences there!
Please see important items for the return to school after the break.
We wanted to share some important information about social media below.

Social Media Concerns
On several occasions this school year, we have been forced to speak to students regarding inappropriate content online, specifically related to Instagram accounts that are named after Dr. E.P. Scarlett posting harassing and inappropriate content, including:
- Sexualized and derogatory comments about female staff and students
- Ridicule of others and/or hate
- References to websites about particular teachers
Dr. E. P. Scarlett administration has been working with our school resource officer and with students to attempt to have offending content removed and/or the site taken down, as we are confident that students from our school began the account and have the ability to remove it. Students are not allowed to impersonate the school as our school media accounts must be regulated by school staff to keep things appropriate and safe.
On Wednesday, April 3, school administrators, along with a school resource officer, will be presenting to start to the Grade 10 classes during Period 1 to emphasize appropriate online behaviour in relationship to the school, effective student citizenship online, and the dangers of inappropriate and illegal content online and on social media. This presentation is to remind students of their obligations and encourage them to take responsibility for their online activities in ethically appropriate ways. We are presenting to Grade 10 students as at this time we believe this may be a Grade 10 student who has created this particular account. However, students from other grades follow which is also problematic. Info related to expectations is in our Student Code of Conduct and Digital Citizenship Policies posted on our website.
We would encourage all families to have open dialogue with their children about digital citizenship, safety on the internet, and general appropriate conduct online and offline. Respectfully, I ask you to double check your child’s apps, stop following inappropriate accounts and review their online presence and security settings. At the end of the day, if you own the device and pay for the device, you are responsible for the content and activities of the users of the device.
We want to ensure our school community is treating each other with respect and dignity. I would also like to remind everyone that inappropriate language or behavior towards students and staff are not harmless pranks, and that possible disciplinary actions can be taken both by the school and by the police. Students have long used social media as part of clubs and school in ways that enhance and promote our community, and we are confident most students mean well and act ethically online.
Congratulations to our Robotics Team
Our Scarlett Robotics Team 20718 competed in the provincial FTC (FIRST Tech Challenge) Championship a couple of weekends ago in Red Deer. They made it through in first place after the qualification matches. Everything came together with the robot working well, the driving team knowing what they were doing and strategy with the alliance team strong. The playoffs were next and they lost the best of three final match 2 – 1.
What a run! I know I speak on behalf of us all when we say we are so proud and to come so close to going to Houston – a huge accomplishment! Congratulations.
Boys Soccer Team
Please note that there is a practice after school Tuesday (April 2) - 3:45 - 4:45 so please bring indoor and outdoor shoes. The first game is Thurs, April 4 at Lester B Pearson.
