Dear Parents and Guardians,
We return to school after the family day holiday welcoming students back on Tuesday. There is much to share with families including information about our basketball teams on an amazing season so far. Pink shirt day is coming up on Feb. 28.
Athletic Update
Junior Boys – had a big win over OLR. While they have a few injuries, the team is clicking and everyone is contributing. Ms. Chilton and volunteer coaches Nate and Cass are so proud of the growth they have seen in the team.
Senior Boys – are 4 and 3 and currently in fourth place in the south division. Mr. Bauer says they have a good shot at winning Division 2. Each game they get better and better!
Junior Girls – Volunteer coaches Tyler and Katie, along with Ms. Senebald are so proud of the girls. They are currently undefeated and the coaches attribute this to their sheer talent and their cohesiveness on and off the court.
Seniors Girls – Mr. Reveen and volunteer coaches Rus, Tara, Cole, and Joelle are excited to be working with the senior girls focusing on personal growth and development to continue to build a strong basketball program at Scarlett. They were recently in Red Deer for a tournament where the girls got lots of playing time and had opportunities to implement what they had been practicing.
Please view our athletic section of our website for more information on all our sports:

Pink Shirt Day is Feb. 28
Students are encouraged to wear pink in support of anti-bullying. There will be 250 pink clothes pins with messages of kindness in the front foyer, in which students can take and clip to another persons belongings to spread good vibes! The first Pink Shirt Day was established by Travis Price and David Shepherd of Berwick, Nova Scotia. In 2007, they bought and shared 50 pink shirts after Chuck McNeill - a male ninth grader got bullied for wearing a pink shirt on the first day of school. We invite students and staff to wear a pink shirt to school on February 28 to raise awareness around the damaging effects of bullying.
Parking Information
We would ask our students to please not park in the Canyon Meadows Swimming Pool parking lot. We have received reports that students have been parking there and will be towed shortly if they continue to take up the spots for patrons at the pool. Thanks for your support of our community partners! Representing our school out in community and doing the right thing are important for us all.
Bamfield Marine Research Station Field Trip October 2024
I am excited to announce that we were lucky enough to secure dates for a field trip to the Bamfield Marine Research Station on the west coast of Vancouver Island from October 29 through November 1, 2024. This 4 day, 3 night trip will allow 21 Scarlett students to have a hands on marine biology experience. The trip will initially be open to our current grade 11 students taking or have taken Biology 20. More details of the trip be available in the weeks ahead and a parent/student meeting will occur in early March. Questions can be emailed to me, Mike McKillop at mdmckillop@cbe.ab.ca.
DELE Registration for Grade 12 Spanish Bilingual students
DELE registration is due on Tuesday. All the forms and information can be found in the Spanish Language Arts 30 D2L shell. Students can pay the fee of $105.00 via their PowerSchool account.
Spanish conversational practices? Any students interested in practicing their Spanish skills in an informal setting are invited to come to a brainstorming of ideas for after school activities.
The meeting will take place on Wednesday February 21 at lunch in room 284.
Spanish Exchange Program
Students enrolled in Spanish 10 3Y and Spanish 10 9Y have the opportunity to apply for the Spanish exchange program offered through Alberta Education. This experience allows students to spend 2 months of their grade 11 year living and studying in Spain, and also provides students from Spain the chance to learn more about Canadian culture and improve their English.
For more information, please email Mrs. Olauson (saolauson@cbe.ab.ca), or visit the Alberta Education website:
https://www.alberta.ca/student-and-educator-exchange-programs
Please note that the application deadline for the school is March 1 to allow for the additional requirements to be completed prior to the March 15th submission date. Late applications will not be considered.
Attention Grade 12 students
Scholarship time is here and the EducationMatters website will be opening up soon. There will be an important scholarship meeting on Wednesday February 21st at lunch in the Learning Commons. We will be discussing the website, making an account and what you need to know to apply for scholarships. If you have questions, please see Ms. Nish in Guidance.
Fun Lunch
Thanks to our parents for organizing this for students. This is an optional service for families and the decision to participate is up to each family. We have not reviewed the health standards at each restaurant so we encourage families to make an informed choice.

Vaping Awareness and Prevention | Family and Caregiver Session
Join the Alberta Health Services Healthy Schools and Population Health Promotion team on Wednesday, March 6 from 7 - 8:30 p.m. for a virtual parent learning session on the youth vaping epidemic.
In this session, parents will learn about what vaping is, current vaping trends among youth and the harms and risks associated with it. We'll explore what legislation is in place at the local and provincial level to combat youth vaping use and what you and your child's school can do about it. Ideas on how to talk to kids and help them quit, as well as where to go for more information will also be covered.
