On January 19 at 9:00 AM mark visibility was turned off on PowerSchool to allow teachers the opportunity to finalize marks and enter comments. If you would like an update on your child/ren’s marks after January 19, you can reach out directly to the teacher via email. Their emails are on our website. On January 30 the semester 1 report cards will be visible on MyCBE.

Thanks to our parents for organizing this for students. This is an optional service for families and the decision to participate is up to each family. We have not reviewed the health standards at each restaurant so we encourage families to make an informed choice.

  • Feb 1 Boston Pizza
  • Feb 8 A&W
  • Feb 22 Wok Box

To participate in fun lunches create an account at www.healthyhunger.ca to register. You will be notified when new lunches are posted and be able to view up-coming lunches, place orders and pay for orders online.

Bus Service Next Week

Express buses to Dr. E.P. Scarlett continue regular service each weekday in January during exams, with the exception of January 25, 26, 29, and 30. January 25, 26, 29, and 30 only have diploma exams.

Buses arrive and leave at their typical times; we are not able to alter Calgary Transit express bus times to be coordinated with our exams in any way. Students who come to school in the afternoon for an exam after the express bus has already arrived, or who leave at the end of an exam before the express bus arrives, will need to take other Calgary Transit buses or arrange alternative transportation.

Express buses return to their regular service on January 31, the first day of Semester 2 classes.

CBE Languages is running the next offering of the Languages Course Challenge program for Grades 10-12 students on Saturday, Feb. 24 and Saturday, March 16. Registrations are now open and the guide has been updated with writing dates and locations for the Winter 2024 session. Applications are due to Guidance Counsellors by Thursday February 8. The Family & Student Guide is and includes the registration form.

In addition to French, student can challenge language exams for Arabic, Cantonese, German, Mandarin, Punjabi, Spanish, Ukrainian, Filipino, Italian and Japanese.

FRENCH 30-3Y Language Course Challenge --> Deadline for signing up is February 8

It's that time of year again - the CBE has announced the date for the Semester 2 French 30-3Y language course challenge. The exam will take place at Western Canada High School on Saturday, Part A will be held on February 24, 2024 starting no later than 8:30am for check-in and Part B will be held on Saturday, March 16, 2024 at 8:30 a.m location to be determined. We encourage our French Immersion students in grades 10-12 to consider taking the French 30-3Y language course challenge prior to graduating. This course challenge is offered every school year in both Semester 1 and Semester 2, therefore it is NOT urgent to sign up if you are in grades 10 or 11, but something to definitely consider signing up for if you are in grade 12. The French 30-3Y course challenge offers students a great opportunity to put to good use all of the hard work they've put into their French language learning and earn extra credits at the same time. The benefits related to this challenge exam are plenty, some of which are outlined in the information booklet that is attached here. Additional information on the particulars of the exam is in the booklet as well, however you can also feel free to reach out to me at nahumenjuk@cbe.ab.ca if you would like.

The sign-up form is in the attached booklet (link above) and once completed must be brought to your guidance counselor directly. The deadline to sign up for the FRENCH 30-3Y language course challenge for Semester 2 is February 8.

DELF B2 Exam - April 15 , 2024

We had our initial information session regarding the DELF B2 exam on Wednesday, January 17th. To date, we have roughly 20 students who are interested in taking the exam. The information below was sent to the students who expressed interest, and several parents who reached out seeking clarification/further information. I ask that students who are interested in taking the DELF B2 exam through the CBE confirm with me as soon as possible. If you have further questions, please email me at: nahumenjuk@cbe.ab.ca. Merci!

DELF - What is it? It is a standardized French language proficiency exam, that uses the European Framework of Reference for Languages at its core. This Framework is what each European Union country uses to guide their language standards, and as such, it is used across the European Union to determine the language levels of incoming students and workers. There are 6 levels in total - A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2.

Why the B2 in High School? The B2 is what is required by the Government of Canada and provincial governments as a language standard to work for them, this would be in conjunction with their own standardized language test. If students are considering post-secondary overseas, the DELF is also an asset as it can support their university application for a foreign exchange to a French-speaking program in an EU country, and also helps facilitate employment in the EU. While C2 is the highest level of accreditation possible, we recommend that people take C2 when they are more mature just as they interact much better with the content and the nature of the reading and writing topics.

French AP or DELF? We encourage students to do both exams. The DELF is an internationally recognized language proficiency accreditation that NEVER expires. The French AP exam which is headed by Mme Olauson, offers students the opportunity to pass an AP-style exam while also earning university credits. Having both is a benefit to students. The two exams DO NOT overlap, neither do the prep sessions for either exam.

Date and Cost? The date of the exam is April 15th, 2024, assuming we have enough candidates the exam will run at Dr. E.P. Scarlett. It is a full-day exam. The cost is $100 for the exam. To date we have 15 candidates interested in takin the exam at Scarlett.

What is the test comprised of? The test includes - Reading comprehension, listening comprehension, written production and an interview.

How many tutorials are offered in preparation of this exam? We run 4-5 tutorial sessions. They are not long sessions, and they target the specific skills necessary to pass the DELF exam. The most difficult components of the test are the written and the interview. I focus more on those two areas but offer materials to practice all parts of the test. Students get a practice exam, and tips on how to successfully complete the exam. So far, we have had a 100% pass rate in the last three years, attending the sessions, particularly the sessions focused on the writing and interview are key to students' success.

If you are interested in taking this exam, please let Mme Costa know by February 1st. If you have a friend who wants to take the DELF but was unable to attend our session, please have them reach out to me. I will begin organizing our tutorial sessions, and I will keep the weekly newsletter updated with information so that our parents know how we are supporting this exam and our students' success at the school.

CAREERS supports skilled trades internships by recruiting employers who can provide quality hands-on experience in building, industrial, metal, piping, electrical, service, and motor-related trades. These employers range from small service businesses to global companies in sectors such as forestry, energy, fabrication, construction, and agriculture. CAREERS then works with high school off-campus coordinators, matching suitable students to available employers.

Students can explore over 50 skilled trades and may also be eligible to begin their apprenticeship training through the Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP).

Workplace Safety Certifications

The following online safety courses are available to all students wishing to acquire workplace safety certifications for their resume and earn high school credits.
