- Indigenous Veteran's Day - Nov. 8
- Metis Week - Nov. 12-18
- Hindu Heritage Month - November
- Diwali - Nov. 12
Indigenous Veteran’s Day
Nov. 8 is about making efforts to better understand the role Indigenous Veterans have played in Canada, and expressing our heartfelt gratitude. Ceremonies are held across Canada to mark this day, and Canadians across the country should pause to honour our Aboriginal veterans.
While exact statistics are difficult to determine, the rate of Indigenous participation in Canada's military efforts over the years has been impressive. These determined volunteers were often forced to overcome many challenges to serve in uniform, from learning a new language and adapting to cultural differences, to having to travel great distances from their remote communities just to enlist. The challenges they faced often extended to their post-service life. Many Indigenous war Veterans would not receive equal treatment compared to other Canadian Veterans.
Metis Week – Nov. 12-18
Each year on November 16, people across Canada pay tribute to the Right Honourable Louis Riel by holding a commemorative ceremony on the date of his execution. In Alberta, the week surrounding November 16 is known as Métis Week.
Students are encouraged to come and take a look at our Metis Awareness bulletin board outside Room 113 to learn about Indigenous Veterans Day (Nov. 8) and about Metis culture.
Hindu Heritage Month - November
Hinduism, also known as Sanatana Dharma, provides a philosophy to understand every aspect of life, including culture, religion, science, ethics, law, cosmology, meteorology and much more. Join practicing Hindu scholars to understand this natural way of life, its meanings, philosophies, and the secrets of this faith tradition.
The Calgary Public Library is hosting a free learning session about Hinduism. You can register for that here:

Diwali – November 12
Diwali is the Hindu festival of lights with its variations also celebrated in other Indian religions. It symbolises the spiritual "victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance".
