Dear Parents / Guardians,
We have a lot going on at the school next week in terms of community builders, sports activities and the fine arts. Our Girls Soccer team is leading their division ranked 1st and will play on Oct 19 for the Quarterfinals 4:30pm at Soccer Centre Field #3. Our football teams have been doing incredibly well and we have really enjoyed having more fans in the stands. Our seniors are now first in their Division and our junior team has made us proud this year. Our swim team has been hard at work at the pool in the mornings. Volleyball teams have been so much fun to watch this season! Go Lancers! Please view our website for information about games and come out to support the teams: https://school.cbe.ab.ca/school/drepscarlett/extracurricular/athletics/pages/default.aspx
Cross Country
We have seven athletes from Cross Country who qualified to participate in Provincials on Oct 21. For our Jr Girls Torah B & Lucie S have made the provincial level. For our Intermediate Girls Kristen N, Julie T & Jessica W have made provincials! From our Intermediate Boys Leith & Gerrit K will be representing the Lancers at the upcoming Provincial competition. Congratulations to each of them and to all of our runners for representing our school so well this season. We would like to thank our coach Mr. Stock for his support and leadership. Thanks also to Ms. Kramer and Ms. McRorie who assisted at the meets.
Music Program
The Scarlett Music program has been working hard to prepare music for our upcoming performances. This week, the Grade 10 Concert Band worked with clinicians to fine tune their pieces for the Winter Concert happening December 6th. The Grade 11/12 Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble have been preparing for the Remembrance Day assembly and their Vic Lewis Band trip happening early November 3-5 out in Canmore. Our Choir has been busy learning music for our Remembrance Day Assembly and preparing for our retreat out at Camp Kindle November 20-21. Lastly, our two Jazz bands have also been preparing material and going over pieces for the All-Ages Jazz Jam being held at MRU (Nickle Theatre) starting at 7:00 PM on October 27.
We are still looking for parent volunteers to help at our Choir and Grade 10 Band Retreat slated for November 20-21. Should you be interested/available, please reach out directly to Mr. Bell (jibellatcbe.ab.ca) (thanks to those of you who have already touched base to offer their time!) A reminder these retreat forms are due no later than October 19.
Upcoming Open-Gym Basketball
- Tuesday and Thursday mornings 7:15am-8:30am
- October 17, 19, 24, 26, 31,
- November 2, 15, 16
Anyone is welcome to join these open gyms. It is a great opportunity to get some reps prior to basketball season as well as those who want to be physically active. There will be a sign-up-sheet posted on Monday of each week. Athletes interested must sign up to attend. It will be a first come first serve basis capped at 30 athletes. Mr. Bauer will be supervising, however, in accordance with Calgary High School Sports there will be no coaching or structure to these open gyms.
Socktober is here!
Leadership students are asking for donations of new or gently used, clean socks. Socks can be dropped off to “Socky”, our socktober drop-off bin outside the main office. All socks will be donated to the Calgary Drop-In Center. As the cooler months approach, we hope to help those who are less fortunate be comfortable and warm!
Halloween Activities
Halloween events are around the corner! October 25, 26, 30 and 31 students have the opportunity to take a tour through our Scarlett Haunted House! Students are being encouraged to donate new or gently used clean socks for our Socktober fundraiser for entry into the haunted house. All donations will go to the Calgary Drop-In Center. *Warning* the haunted house will contain mature themes, jump scares, a strobe light and fog machine. If students have a sensitivity to flashing lights, they can request to have it turned off for their tour.
There will also be a costume contest on Tuesday October 31 at lunch in the main gym. Students have the option to take part in the contest by registering using the QR Code on posters at the school, or they may choose to be an audience member and vote on their favorite costumes!
Please note that costumes must be:
- Culturally sensitive
- No masks (with the exception of participants during the costume contest, once their identity has been confirmed)
- No weapons
