Dear Parents / Guardians,
This upcoming week after Thanksgiving will be busy. The Calgary Board of Education invites all parents and guardians to join us in an online series focusing on child and youth well-being. These sessions will be hosted in partnership with experts from Alberta Health Services and will explore topics such as vaping, brain development, mental health, and sexual health.

Child and Youth Well-Being:
A Webinar Series for Parents and Guardians
CBE educators believe that parents and guardians can inspire their kids to make healthy lifestyle choices and increase protective factors – in order to do so, they need the right tools and information. There are sessions on educating students and parents on vaping, teen brain development, anxiety and depression and healthy sexual development. These are optional sessions for you to attend if you wish to.
Well-being is a precondition for learning. As our understanding of student well-being continues to evolve, it is important for those that support children and youth to stay up to date on the same information so everyone can support student success.
The intention of the series is to advance student well-being by raising family and caregiver’s understanding of a variety of health-related topics. Thank you for your time and consideration to join us.
Athletic Update
Scarlett organized a volleyball tournament this weekend. We were incredibly proud how both our teams worked together like a team and played hard. Our girls won the bronze this weekend. Our girls soccer has had much success as well and they have had much success to date. Our Cross Country team has had an incredible season with City Finals coming up at St. Mary's University on Wednesday - come cheer on your Lancers! Preparation for Post-Secondary Applications
Some post-secondary institutions opened their Fall 2024 applications on October 1st. Please do not rush your application. Make sure you have researched programs and competitive admission averages (or Fall 2023 admission averages) prior to applying. Most applications will request Grade 11 final grades and Grade 12 current and/or anticipated grades. A combination of these grades will be used to calculate your average. You are often able to select a second choice program as well. Selecting a second choice with a lower competitive admission average will improve your chances of receiving an offer. Make sure to apply for entrance awards with each institution as well. Check the application and awards deadlines. Some entrance awards have deadlines in early December.
Locker Information
Locker information was emailed to students on September 21, 2023. If students did not receive their locker information, they can send an email to our Business Manager, Kerri Popp: kedpopp@cbe.ab.ca. If students have not yet signed up for a locker, they are still able to do so by completing the Locker Request Form and one will be assigned to them.
Terry Fox Day
We are proud to share that our school raised a grand total of $1916.70 to support Cancer Research. Big congrats to Ms. Basra’s Period 3 class for raising the most money and taking 1st place in the P3 competition, raising $175.15.
Scholarship Information
This is also on our Scholarships page.
Thank you to all the students and parents that attended our Scholarship Meetings on October 4 at lunch and in the evening. The meetings were well attend and we hope that students take advantage of all the free money that is out there. What we covered in our scholarship meeting you can find in the Scholarship D2L Shell. In content, you will find many different scholarships but remember there is still many more out there. Check to see if your guardian’s work has scholarships for students of employees.
As promised at the student and parent meetings, here are the three links to do more scholarship searches:
A couple of points to bring to your attention:
Canada Student Loans – the Federal Government website with links to savings programs and student loans
Alberta Student Aid – Alberta’s government offers scholarships and awards to encourage and reward the excellence of Albertans in post-secondary study.
Alexander Rutherford Scholarship – this is found in the scholarship section of content in D2L. Please remember that you apply for this in the summer of the year you intend on going to post secondary.
**Post Secondary School Scholarships
Please remember whichever post-secondary you are considering, check their award page on the school’s website to research various sources of funding that may be available to you. If your student has any questions or concerns, please ask them to make an appointment with Ms. Nish in guidance.
