Dear Parent & Guardians,

We really enjoyed welcoming students last week! We know that starting the school year comes with both nerves and excitement. We are here to help. Reach out to your child’s teacher, AP or counsellors as needed.

Each weekend we will be sending you a weekly message in preparation for the week ahead. We hope to communicate with you in a format that provides easy access and important news about the school.

We will provide important dates at the start followed by headings with info you can scroll through to look at information that applies to your child. This information will also be posted to the website and will be housed there under Stories. Our website has a lot of information for you to look at.  See it here: https://school.cbe.ab.ca/school/drepscarlett/Pages/default.aspx

Feel free to follow our school on Instagram as well. Many of our school’s student leadership news are posted there: https://www.instagram.com/epslancers/

Wear a Jersey in Memory

On Tuesday September 3 we are inviting staff and students to wear their Flames jersey, or any hockey jersey, to show support and honor the memory of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau. Donations to MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) can be made in the office all week.

Photo Day

Lifetouch will be back on Wed., Sept 4 to take photos for students still needing ID cards. Lifetouch will return on Oct. 28 for retakes.

Come Sing with Us!

All students are invited to join us in room 102 this Thursday, September 5 afterschool. We will be done at 5pm. There is no need to be registered to come try this and you will have some time to explore this opportunity before a commitment is expected.

Student Services Updates

A big thank you to our students for their patience as counsellors worked diligently to process course change requests via our online form. Our course change period was communicated via social media and student email and closed on August 25. Counsellors have now processed all possible requests and any students with remaining timetable conflicts will see  “See Counsellor” during their lunch block. Counsellors will call these students from class to discuss their schedule. At this time, we are unable to accommodate additional requests for course changes. Students requesting to withdraw from a class (without replacing it with another class) can pick up a course withdrawal form from the guidance office.

Appointments

Booked appointments will resume September 9. Students can book an appointment with their counsellor through our Guidance Secretary, Ms. Smith Myrthu, in the Learning Commons.

Fall Online Courses

CBe-learn is still accepting registrations for fall online courses, subject to availability. Please see CBe-learn’s website  to view course offerings. Students should complete their own registration using the following link: CBe-learn Fall Online Course Request

Communication

All students have a school email account ending in educbe.ca, accessed through the Google suite. Students in high school should check this email regularly, so they do not miss important updates or communication from teachers and Student Services.

Healthy Hunger

This is an optional service for families and the decision to participate is up to each family. We have not reviewed the health standards at each restaurant so we encourage families to make an informed choice.

To participate in fun lunches create an account at www.healthyhunger.ca to register. You will be notified when new lunches are posted and be able to view up-coming lunches, place orders and pay for orders online.

**Please note all volunteers must have a valid police background check and a completed annual CBE volunteer registration form.**

City of Calgary Transit Routes to Scarlett

High School students in the CBE use Calgary Transit to attend school unless they have other means of transportation. Students must carry proof of fare when using Calgary Transit. Though we don’t supervise bus routes we work in partnership with the City of Calgary to support our students.

Because of heavy volume before and after school, Calgary Transit provides dedicated school express routes for Dr. E.P. Scarlett High School. These routes collect students in the morning and drive directly to the school; in the afternoon, these buses await students near Canyon Meadows Pool and drive directly to the designated neighbourhood to drop students off.

You can find the school express route maps and general schedules here. Please note that the times are for designated locations only, but the buses will collect students at other Calgary Transit stops on the same route path within the neighbourhood.

We work hard to monitor arrival and departure times for Calgary Transit school express routes. If you have questions or concerns regarding express routes, please contact our assistant principal for transportation, Jason Wutzke, at jbwutzke@cbe.ab.ca. Students remain responsible to the student code of conduct when riding the bus; if you have questions or concerns regarding student behaviour on Calgary Transit buses, please contact your child's assistant principal administrator for assistance.

Grade 10 Math Classes and Calculators

Students and Parents new to Math 10C or Math 15 this semester, please note that graphing calculators are required. The most popular models are the Ti-84 plus, the Ti-83 plus, or the Casio fx 9750 GIII. If you decide to purchase a different model, then it is very important that you make sure it is approved by Alberta Education. Here is a link to the Alberta Education document regarding graphing calculators: https://www.alberta.ca/system/files/custom_downloaded_images/edc-calculator-information-and-rules.pdf

For a student new to Math 10-3. Any scientific calculator is adequate.  It is preferable to have one with a screen that allows for more than one line of calculations.

For all new Students in General: Math 20-1, 20-2, 30-1, 30-2, 31 or math AP classes all require a graphing calculator the same as specified above for grade 10’s. Please feel free to contact the math department with any questions.
